Yellowstone’s Rainbow in the Ground
Of all the natural wonders in Yellowstone, few are as jaw-dropping as Grand Prismatic Spring. This enormous hot spring glows with rings of blue, green, yellow, and orange, like a rainbow spilled across the earth. It is the largest hot spring in the United States and a highlight of any Yellowstone tour. Here is what makes it so special.
Why It Is So Colorful
The stunning colors are alive, in a sense. The deep blue center is very hot, near boiling, and too hot for most life. As the water spreads outward and cools, different heat-loving microbes called thermophiles thrive at different temperatures, and each produces a different color. The result is those famous concentric bands, from blue in the middle to fiery orange at the cooler edges.
Two Ways to See It
Grand Prismatic is best appreciated from two vantage points, and doing both is ideal:
- The boardwalk in the Midway Geyser Basin takes you right alongside the spring, close to the steam and colors.
- The Grand Prismatic Overlook, a short uphill trail nearby, gives you the famous top-down view of the whole rainbow.

The overlook is where those iconic photos come from, since the spring is so large it is hard to take in from ground level.
Tips for Your Visit
A little timing helps. Steam can hide the colors on cold mornings, so a warm, sunny midday often shows them best. Stay on the boardwalks and trails at all times, since the ground around thermal features is thin and dangerously hot. Bring sun protection and water for the overlook walk, and keep your camera ready.
A Note of Respect and Safety
These thermal areas are as fragile as they are beautiful. Never step off the boardwalk, never touch the water, and keep well back from the edges. Following the rules protects both you and this irreplaceable wonder for the future.
See the Colors for Yourself
Grand Prismatic Spring is one of those sights that photos barely capture. Standing beside its glowing bands, or looking down on the full rainbow from the overlook, is unforgettable. Ask us about Yellowstone tours that include this colorful wonder, and prepare to be amazed.
